When spring of 2020 started to get a little cray cray, this #covidbride (yours truly) and groom decided to tie the knot in a minimony on our original date, June 6, 2020. We’d had to make the agonizing decision to postpone to November, but with me finishing up grad school in North Carolina, Tyler getting a job offer in Atlanta, and the total uncertainty of the world as we knew it, we decided that we just couldn’t wait any longer to be Mr. and Mrs. Being able to keep this special ceremony all to ourselves (our little secret!) was such a beautiful way to start our marriage, surrounded only by our immediate families, and celebrating again with a full ceremony and reception in November was the icing on the cake.
We all gathered under the jasmine-covered pergolas, and standing on my parents’ fire pit we vowed forever to each other while Tyler’s dad officiated.
I saved my “official” wedding dress for the ceremony in November, and wore this dress from JJ’s House (an online formal dress site) instead, after ordering way too many dresses from Lulu’s to find a white dress that would do for our micro wedding. I did my own makeup and I made my bouquet from flowers in my mother’s garden, mainly day lilies, which was so special. My “something old” was a bracelet that had been my grandmother’s, which I borrowed from my mom for the occasion.
We had a family dinner cooked by my mom and my grandmother, with a cake that I had baked the day before. Our first dance was to “Your Song” by Elton John, and we had to mosh a little to “Ever After” by Marianas Trench in an ode to our long-distance days. We danced like fools and drank too much wine. There were fireworks and a sparkler exit, and so much love. Afterwards, we honeymooned for a day in Asheville, NC, and explored the Biltmore before heading back to our first apartment together to pack up and move down to Atlanta the following weekend. It was a crazy week, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Happy second anniversary to my hubby.
xoxo, The Houks
