It’s time for Part 2 of my series on what to wear for your pictures! I’m breaking down my style guide to show you how to dress the best. We are covering the most flattering shapes and silhouettes for perfect portraits. Whether you are booked for a maternity, engagement, family or senior session, you will look great!
If choosing sweaters for fall and winter, consider wearing something with an asymmetrical hem. In other words, something that is not straight across the bottom. This will help avoid looking too bulky or cut off. You can also avoid this by using a French tuck to add flattering lines.
Good choices for outdoor shoots are pants and long or mid-length dresses, especially flowy dresses and skirts to create movement and flatter any figure. Plus, flowy skirts are great for that romantic twirl factor! Mamas – one of my favorite online store for maternity dresses that fit this description is Baltic Born.
For ladies, other flattering options include v-necklines, wrap tops and dresses, and jumpsuits with waist ties.
It can be hard for mamas especially to find something they feel confident or sexy in. It is OKAY to start with your outfit and mold everyone around yours. You can do this pulling out key colors or adding depth with different shades. Put yourself first! You rock and deserve to feel that way in pictures.
And remember – it’s all about coordinating and complementing, not matching!
Be aware of your “problem areas.” Many people, especially women, have areas of their bodies that they tend to be self-conscious about. For some it’s the hips or stomach. For others, it’s the neck, or upper arms. In your session, I want you to feel as comfortable in your body as possible, and that includes dressing to feel great so that you love your photos later. Tips for these areas include three-quarter sleeves (vs. sleeves that cut off your upper arm or elbow), wearing flowy skirts and dresses or tops with more torso length (vs. tight waistbands or crop tops), and avoiding tank tops or spaghetti straps.
When in doubt, throw those men in a white shirt with khakis, and add a blazer to dress it up a bit and create layers.
