Couples sessions will always and forever be one of my favorite things to photograph because capturing intimate moments and natural expressions of joy and love is so rewarding! Whether you are looking for pictures with your dating partner, spouse, maternity, engagement, or anniversary, is so important to me to produce images that genuinely display who you are as a couple. Today, I’m using this lovely couple, Beth Anne and Chris, to share some of my favorite prompts to make this happen (TLDR: lots of laughs and sometimes awkward moments involved). See some of my favorite posing tips for photographing couples below!
Above: have her put her belly button against his hip bone and he squeezes her in tight; they can look at each other or look at me.
Above left: have one of the partners creep up as quietly as they can behind the other and then grab them like you are trying to kidnap them (key word here, “surprise”).
Above right: eskimo kisses! (rubbing noses together gently, but no squishing)
Above: go in for a light kiss but they have to hold it until I say KISS! This can elicit some gorgeous and emotional almost-kissing pics that I always die for.
Above right: this time, it’s her turn to surprise him!
Above left: similar to the hold-it-kiss mentioned above, here I instruct couples to “kiss with your teeth” (essentially bringing their faces as close together while smiling). It looks beautiful and natural, and often elicits giggles.
Above right: this is one my couples always hear me do – just plain walking. It’s something almost everybody is good at, and creates natural movement and interaction. This can be a great break in posed shooting for couples who feel too stiff or aren’t quite comfortable yet.
Above right: have him spin her in slowly like they are dancing. This is a great way to get shots for a GIF as well (which I love surprising my clients with!).
I hope you enjoyed these posing tips for photographing couples. Let me know which one is your favorite in the comments below!
