Going back home to visit my parents in Alabama is always such a reset and refresh for my soul. My mom has a serious green thumb, and honestly just walking through their front yard is enough to feel completely at ease.
Honestly, is there any self care greater for a plant lover (or anyone, really) than spending time in a garden? All of the colors, vivid and bright; the smell of the dew as it clings to your toes; the buzz of bees; the morning sun warming your skin…at least until it reaches a scorching high 80s-90s. This is south Alabama after all.
Some of the lilies and irises in my mother’s garden originated at the home of her great-grandmother. Each time my mom and dad have moved houses, my mom has dug up a few bulbs and replanted them in each new garden. I imagine her leaving a trail of blooming gardens along the path of her various different homes, bringing with her a piece of family history in the women who have come before us. I so look forward to bringing some of those precious bulbs with me when I make my own home.
Of course, self care looks different for everyone (and I’d never pass up a good glass of wine and a bubble bath. Mmmm). If you are like me, though, and green and growing things call to the life inside of you as well, I invite you to linger here in my mother’s garden with me. Take as long as you like.
